After a pot luck supper at the new location at the party office, new chair Tom Hochschild presided over a standing-room-only crowd that heard Deb Cox, Dexter Sharper, Demarcus Marshall, and J.D. Rice.

Lowndes County Elections Supervisor Deb Cox said there’s a special election in Lake Park for an unexpired City Council seat, poll workers are needed, and you can register to vote online.

Dexter Sharper, re-elected from District 177 (Valdosta and parts of Lowndes County) to the Georgia House, spoke about the need for early financial education, for gun safety instruction should be required to get a firearm permit, and for medical certification for coroner positions throughout the state of Georgia. NOTICE FOR QUALFYING

Notice is hereby given in accordance with O.C.G.A. § 21-2-540 that a special election shall be held in Lowndes County on May 20, 2014, to fill a vacancy in the office of Lowndes County Commissioner representing District 5 formerly held by John Page for a term to expire December 31, 2016.

All persons who are not registered to vote and who desire to register to vote in the special election may register to vote at the office of the Board of Elections located at 2808 North Oak Street, Valdosta, Georgia, through the close of business at 5:00 p.m. on April 21, 2014.

Advance voting will be held beginning on April 28, 2014. Polls will be open on May 20, 2014 from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Qualifying for placement on the May 20, 2014 ballot will be from 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2014, through 12:00 noon Friday, March 14, 2014, in the office of the Board of Elections located at 2808 North Oak Street, Valdosta, Georgia.

The qualifying fee is $450.

Candidates shall be listed alphabetically on the ballot. Candidates may choose to designate on the ballot their party affiliation. The party affiliation selected by a candidate shall not be changed following the close of qualifying.

First round of qualifying

Qualifying for the May 20, 2014 primary in Georgia and Lowndes County has been like a game of fruit basket upset or musical chairs. With all state wide offices and all state senate and house seats available, along with local county commission and school board seats, there was room for everyone (and then some).

In Lowndes County, County Commission districts 2, 3 and 4 are up for election, along with GA House seats 174, 175, 176 and 177 and GA Senate seat 8. The shuffling began when Richard Raines (County Commission 2) announced that he would not seek reelection. Then Tim Golden (Senate Seat 8) also announced that he would not seek reelection.

FOR LOWNDES COUNTY COMMISSION DISTRICT 3
(to succeed CRAWFORD POWELL)

Notice is hereby given that in accordance with O.C.G.A. 21-2-153(c)(1)(D) the qualifying period for candidates to qualify for Lowndes County Commission District 3 (to succeed Crawford Powell), shall be reopened at 9:00 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, and shall cease at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.

Candidates may qualify at the offices of the Lowndes County Board of Elections, located at 2808 North Oak Street, Valdosta, Georgia.

“What we’re really primarily looking for is people who are supporting Democratic values”, says Lowndes County Democratic Committee Chairman, Gretchen Quarterman.

Qualifying for local offices continues Thursday March 6 from 9am-5pm and Friday March 7 from 9am – 12noon and the Lowndes County Board of Elections, 2808 North Oak Street in Valdosta, GA.

Citizens interested in running for office are invited to apply for the open Lowndes Count Board of Commisioners and Lowndes County School Board seats.
